When you get a bad muscle cramp, what do you do to cope?

If it's in the leg, some people find it helps to work on it. Others might advise that you massage the affected area towards the heart.

What works for you and why?

try to stretch the shortened muscle. The most common is calf cramp - just pull top of the feet towards you to lenghten soleus and gastronemues.

in emergency, when muscle spasm is life treathening (like swimming), use a pin or needle to prick affected muscle.

if you are swimming in an open water it's worth to stash a needle in your swimming suite

I tend to treat them with indifference.
I usually go to my Karate classes no matter what and after an hour of kicking I just feel better already. I had some strained muscles at both legs when I tested for a belt. My instructor only found out these days, after 3 years from the event. He admitted he wouldn't have let me test Smile

after a heavy exercise you might need a pinch of salt to balance your system

first of all, drink a lot of water with some salt before exercising.

during heavy workout we loose a lot of sweat and minerals, so take frequent brakes and sip water.

muscle cramps might be as well because of the micro injuries to your muscles, try not to overdo yourself
